Short answer
A travel eSIM is the easiest way to get online in Bali and the rest of Indonesia: you land at Ngurah Rai or Soekarno-Hatta already connected, with no SIM-shop queue. It also avoids the IMEI registration that local Indonesian SIM cards in foreign phones require.

Coverage in Indonesia
Indonesia's networks are Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, XL Axiata and Smartfren. Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Lombok and the Gili Islands have good 4G; each plan card shows its partner network.
Coverage thins out on remote islands, in the mountains and on parts of Nusa Penida and Komodo, so download offline maps for boat and hiking trips.
eSIM or local SIM in Indonesia?
Foreign phones using an Indonesian SIM card must have their IMEI registered with customs, usually at the airport. A travel eSIM connects through roaming partner networks, so there is nothing to register: you install it at home and it works on arrival.
How much data do you need?
- One week in Bali: 5–10 GB (Grab or Gojek, maps, villa check-ins, photos).
- Two weeks island-hopping: 15–20 GB.
- Digital nomads and heavy video: an unlimited day pass or a large plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does the eSIM work on Nusa Penida and the Gili Islands?
The main areas have coverage, but some beaches and cliffs on Nusa Penida are weak.
Do I need to register my phone's IMEI?
Not with a travel eSIM. IMEI registration applies to local Indonesian SIM cards in foreign phones.
Can I use Grab and Gojek?
Yes, both work over mobile data across Bali and Indonesia's cities.
