Short answer
On iPhone XS/XR or newer, open Settings › Cellular (or Mobile Service) › Add eSIM › Use QR Code and scan the code from your email, or tap "Install on iPhone" on your order page with iOS 17.4 or later. Name the line "Travel", use it for Cellular Data, and turn on Data Roaming for it when you land.
Before you start
- iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or newer, updated to the latest iOS.
- The iPhone must be carrier-unlocked. iPhones sold in mainland China (except some models) don't support eSIM.
- A Wi-Fi connection during installation.
- Don't delete the eSIM after installing it: most QR codes can only be installed once.
Install the eSIM
- 1Fastest way (iOS 17.4+): open your order page on the iPhone and tap "Install on iPhone". Confirm and wait for activation.
- 2With the QR code: open Settings › Cellular (Mobile Service) › Add eSIM › Use QR Code, then scan the code from your email (from another screen or a printout).
- 3When asked, label the new line "Travel".
- 4Default line: keep your home line for calls, SMS and iMessage/FaceTime.
- 5Cellular Data: choose "Travel" and turn off "Allow Cellular Data Switching" so your home line doesn't use data abroad.
When you arrive
- 1Go to Settings › Cellular and tap the "Travel" line.
- 2Make sure "Turn On This Line" is enabled.
- 3Turn on "Data Roaming" for the Travel line (it is a roaming eSIM, so this is required).
- 4Wait a minute for the phone to connect to a local network.
Troubleshooting
- No internet: check that Data Roaming is on for the Travel line and that Cellular Data is set to Travel.
- Still nothing: switch Airplane Mode on and off, or restart the iPhone.
- If your order page shows an APN, enter it in Settings › Cellular › Travel › Cellular Data Network.
- Try selecting a network manually: Settings › Cellular › Travel › Network Selection, turn off Automatic.
- "Unable to complete cellular plan change" during installation usually means a weak Wi-Fi connection: move closer to the router and try again.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install the eSIM before my trip?
Yes, and we recommend it. The plan validity starts when the eSIM first connects in your destination, not when you install it.
Will I still receive calls and SMS on my number?
Yes, if you keep your home line turned on. Data goes through the travel eSIM; calls and SMS stay on your normal line (your carrier may charge for roaming calls).
Can I keep the eSIM for my next trip?
You can keep it installed. When the plan ends you can top it up from your order page or buy a new plan for another destination.
How many eSIMs can an iPhone store?
Recent iPhones can store several eSIMs and use two lines at the same time.
